Since August 2019, Emilia Nangula Siami has been forced to look at the two-bedroom structure in which her daughter was hacked to death because the structure can only be dismantled in the presence of the suspect's family.

Siami (51) has still not come to terms with the loss of her daughter – then breadwinner Naimi Ngambo Kalenga, who was allegedly murdered by her long-time boyfriend who hacked her with an axe at Sikali village in Kavango West Region in 2019.

She says the suspect's family have not made contact since the murder.

No extradition

After committing the crime, the suspect fled into Angola, where he was then arrested.

Namibian authorities however state that the absence of an extradition treaty with the neighbouring country means they cannot extradite the suspect to Namibia.

On 16 August 2019, the suspect, who has three children aged three, five and eight with the deceased, attacked the mother of his children before he fled into Angola where he was subsequently arrested.

Struggling

On Saturday, Namibian Sun visited the family to see how they are doing and whether there has been progress made in the case.

Siami said although her three grandchildren are recipients of monthly state grants of N$250 each, it is difficult to care for them together with 12 other family members who depend on her, since she is unemployed. “I am not happy with what happened to my daughter. Like I said before, she was the breadwinner and now for me to take care of the entire family while I am unemployed is such a huge challenge,” Siami said.

“I am grateful for government for the N$750 which I get per month for them but still it does not cater for their needs. Their needs are multiplying as they grow and it's very difficult to keep up.

“We are looking forward to the mahangu harvest as it might keep us going for the year. We are really struggling now. When my daughter was still alive, we shared responsibilities but now it's just me,” she said.

She told Namibian Sun that the last time the police briefed her about the case was back in October 2019.

“If they said the suspect was arrested in 2019 in Angola, why can't they bring him to face the crime he committed,” Siami questioned.

When approached for comment yesterday, Police Inspector-General Sebastian Ndeitunga said there has been no progress in extraditing the suspect from Angola.
