Four African comedians owning the world of entertainment

Without a doubt, Africa is home to some amazing entertainment. From much-loved series to showstopping productions, there’s so much our continent has to offer the entertainment industry, and that also extends to making the world laugh. Let’s celebrate our African comics by shining a spotlight on four African comedians who are making waves.
Trevor Noah
Embracing his humble beginnings, one of the continent’s most prominent comedians and talk show hosts made his start sharing stories of his upbringing. Born and bred in South Africa, because of apartheid, Trevor Noah’s parents’ relationship was illegal. This led to some rather unique childhood experiences that he’s written a book about and have become the foundation for his comedic career. He has since moved on to the glitz and glam that is Hollywood, and currently hosts American late-night talk show ‘The Daily Show’, from Tuesday to Friday at 23:30, on Comedy Central, DStv channel 122.
Tyson Ngubeni
Another South African export leaving the world in stitches is the comical genius Tyson Ngubeni. He is famous for his hilarious skits and based on their success, has since gone on to score a deal with ESPN advertising in a campaign that guides viewers through the complex world of American sporting leagues such as the NBA and NFL, which feature on ESPN and ESPN 2. For this collaboration, he plays one of his hilarious fictional characters, sports commentator, Bob O’Connor. If it weren't for a stubbed toe at graduation, O’Connor would’ve been a professional athlete – the likes of which has never been seen before. While you can’t follow his athletic career, you can follow the latest international sports by tuning in to ESPN on DStv channel 218 and ESPN2 on 219.
Eddie Kadi
We have the Democratic Republic of the Congo to thank for Eddie Kadi, an incredibly talented British-Congolese musician, actor, comedian, presenter and entertainment hotshot. Eddie is a tri-lingual superstar who has been celebrated with many awards throughout his career. He has even hosted some of the industry’s most exclusive award shows, including the BET International and BET Africa awards in June 2019. He may have left the continent, but he still finds ways to celebrate his heritage and culture. Bright Okpocha aka Basketmouth
Better known as Basketmouth, stand-up comedy hasn’t quite been the same since Bright Okpocha arrived on the scene. The Nigerian comedian and actor has toured the globe, sharing his craft and keeping audiences entertained for hours. He has also given the world of music a shot, taking on the drums and experimenting with rapping. He even formed a group called Da Psychophats, but they broke up before they could release music. Since then, he has launched a record label called Barons World Entertainment as well as an album titled ‘Yabasi’ in November 2020. More recently, he has taken on the role of Frank Obasohan in the Africa Magic (DStv channel 151) show ‘My Flatmates’, which airs Monday to Friday at 19:30.
