The 59 officials completed their Masters of International Customs Law and Administration, Graduate Certificates in Customs Administration, Bachelors of Border Management and Lower Diplomas online.

The courses, which were fully funded by the ministry of finance, were conducted with the aim of building capacity amongst the customs employees.

Awarding the qualifications, Namibia Customs and Excise commissioner, Gerrit Eiman said human capital is the most valuable asset in any organisation, hence government saw it fit to embrace and establish the department as a professional entity.

He added that capacitating the staff means keeping pace with the ever-changing professional environment.

“The principal objective of the capacity building programme is to help all customs and excise officials diverting into academic fields, staff members directing into a scope of work, thereby ensuring professional improvement, career development, retention of skills and knowledge,” he noted.

The initiative equipped the officials with the necessary knowledge and skills to increase and improve their productivity and this should also be evident in their execution, Eiman said.

He said the collaboration between the government and the finance institution is crucial to realise the government’s agendas.

“The success of the institution and of Namibia lies in our hands,” he said, adding that capacity building initiatives aimed at equipping staff members with the necessary skills and knowledge are crucial for current and future customs challenges.

Since the inception of the collaboration with the Australian university in 2014, over 120 officials have completed courses and benefited from the online programme.
