After more than a week, a fire in the Etosha National Park is still raging. The fire has destroyed a large section of veld south of Namutoni, as well as an area around Halali. There have been no reports of injuries or damage to the rest camps. According to Colgar Sikopo of the environment ministry, the fire was raging in an area of the park the ministry burnt down for pasture management. “[However,] we have an aircraft onsite to monitor the situation from the air and to communicate with the ground team,” he said on Friday, describing the fire as “under control”. It is unclear how many hectares have been destroyed so far. Meanwhile, there have been reports over the weekend of several veldfires in other parts of the country, including one at Otavi, while on Sunday afternoon, a major fire raged in an area southwest of Witvlei.
