Duinesig defeated Narraville 1-0 in the final of the senior division of the G4S Bhubesi Pride Africa Rugby Day tournament at Atlantis sports grounds in Walvis Bay on Saturday.

Narraville III defeated Narraville II 2-0 in the final of the junior division. Narraville II eliminated Narraville I and Narraville III defeated Kuisebmond in the semi-final round of the junior division.

Narraville defeated Immanuel Ruiters I and Duinesig eliminated Immanuel Ruiters II in the semi-final round of the senior division.

Some 340 from six primary schools participated in the touch rugby tournament with 12 international volunteers facilitating the event.

Former Namibian rugby team captain and Bhubesi Pride ambassador Jacques Burger also motivated the future players at the event.

The tough tackling flanker retired from international rugby after a career spanning nine years and during which he amassed 36 caps including three world cup appearances in 2007, 2011 and 2015. He also won the Premiership twice with Saracens in England.

Donna van den Heever of G4S Namibia hailed development through sport as an exciting approach to corporate social responsibility and said there are some remarkable programmes around the world successfully promoting the relationship between brands, sport and social responsibility.

“G4S identified the Bhubesi Pride Project which is set to continue making a marked and sustainable difference in the lives of countless children across more than 10 African countries, including Namibia.”

The G4S-Bhubesi Pride Foundation partnership touched the lives of more than 3 600 children from 53 schools in nine African countries including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa in 2016.

The BP Foundation is a charity which aims to unite communities through rugby, promoting the sport's values and life skills enters its sixth year of operations in Africa.

It also strives to empower and up-skill local staff, nurture community leaders and inspire long-term developmental outcomes through tangible legacy projects in conjunction with in-country partners.

The charity assembles qualified and dedicated teams of volunteers to carry out annual coaching expeditions, supporting rugby and community development in schools and community centres in east and southern Africa between January and September during six month mission's very year.

The Foundation in collaboration with G4S Namibia commenced with a three-year programme in Walvis Bay in 2015 after three years of successfully linking up with seven schools in Rehoboth.

A coaching team worked with the Kudu and Walvis Bay rugby clubs and empowered 15 local coaches while 489 learners from Narraville, Nara, Tutaleni, Kuisebmond, Flamingo, Duinesig and Immanuel Ruiters primary schools participated in the inaugural programme at Narraville Rugby Stadium.

The volunteers worked with 150 primary school learners from Narraville, Flamingo, Nara, Duinesig, Immanuel Ruiters, Kuiseb and empowered five local coaches at Jan Wilken last year.
