Undefeated featherweight fighter Sakaria 'Desert Storm' Lukas was scheduled to face America's Jessie Magdaleno in a highly anticipated 10-round fight at the Hulu Theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York in March, but it was called off due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Initially scheduled as an undercard to American Shakur Stevenson's WBO featherweight title defence against Miguel Marriaga of Colombia, it is now unclear who the Namibian boxer will go up against.

Questions sent to his trainer went unanswered by the time of going to print. But because Desert Storm is eager to add another feather to his cap by contending for a world title on American soil, the homegrown fighter has been practicing out of the gym since AC Boxing Academy, owned by Immanuel 'AC' Moses, had to close its doors due to financial constraints. Without the lucrative sponsorship of telecommunications giant MTC, which the likes of Nestor 'Sunshine' Tobias Boxing and Fitness Academy and Salute Boxing Academy enjoy, Desert Storm's team is forced to organise everything themselves before a fight.

Despite this, the team – consisting of strength and conditioning coach Martin Angombe, trainer Nicky Natangwe and other boxers under their wings – hasn't taken a step back, instead refocusing and implementing new ways of keeping Desert Storm fit.

They have been using outdoor facilities to train the boxers just to show that there are different means to succeed.

Undefeated

Managed by Global Boxing Stars, Desert Storm has an impressive undefeated career of 23 wins and is currently ranked fifth by the International Boxing Federation and eighth in the World Boxing Association's rankings.

The 36-year old was last in action last December when he stopped Malawi's Raston Kayira in the third round of their six-round fight at Windhoek's After School Centre.

Before that, he faced Ndodana Ncube of Zimbabwe, who he also beat, in May 2019.
