Dausab takes over from Shanghala at LRDC
The newly appointed chairperson of the Law Reform and Development Commission (LRDC), Yvonne Dausab, says she plans to introduce new legislation that will address challenges faced by disabled people and promote the rights of gays and lesbians.
Dausab succeeds Sacky Shanghala, who is now the country’s attorney-general.
She is the first woman to hold the position of LRDC chairperson.
“I feel honoured for the confidence the President (Hage Geingob) has shown in my work,” she said.
Dausab said she brings to the table innovation and energy.
“I have knowledge of the private and public sector, as well as my experience as a teacher.”
According to her there are a number of laws from the apartheid-era that have become obsolete.
“I will also deal with laws pertaining to access to justice, disability laws and anything that resonates with women empowerment and social development,” she promised.
She added that much still needs to be done to address the plight of disabled people, saying there is a need to address accommodation and services for them.
“We must look at the current laws. Disabled people are among the most marginalised people.”
Dausab, who is also the deputy dean of the University of Namibia (Unam) Law Faculty, boasts 16 years of experience working in the legal profession.
In a statement yesterday, President Hage Geingob wished Dausab success in her new role.
He also commended Shanghala for the excellent work he did during his tenure as LRDC chairperson.
