Over 14 000 Katima Mulilo Urban residents are expected to cast their votes today to determine who will serve as their constituency councillor following the death of John Muchila Mukaya in a car accident earlier this year.
It will be a six-horse race to fill the vacant position between Swapo Party candidate Kennedy Simasiku, Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) candidate Marklee Mweti Matengu, Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) candidate Malipa Lynnette, National Democratic Party (NDP) candidate Chripher Simasiku and two independent candidates, Kubwima Poniso Millar and Nkando Gibson Kabuna.
The polls will open at 07:00 and close at 21:00 today.
The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) last week announced that all was set for the political showdown to elect a regional councillor for Katima Mulilo Urban Constituency.

Today’s by-election might be won on the basis of the popularity of the candidates or the parties they represent, as all the candidates made the same promises in their campaigns.
The candidates who spoke to Namibian Sun all said that if elected into office, they would fight to resolve issues such as access to potable water, electrification of rural settlements, poor roads, land servicing and job creation.
Other promises by the candidates included turning Katima Mulilo into a logistics hub and calling on various ministries to decentralise services to the town.
