RUNDU

The best performing school in the country, St Boniface College, has suspended lessons after 167 learners, six teachers and four non-teaching staff tested positive for Covid-19. Meanwhile, the region has lost four teachers and one non-teaching staff member to the virus.

This was confirmed by Kavango East education director Fanuel Kapapero, who yesterday told Namibian Sun that seven schools in the region – including St Boniface – have suspended face-to-face teaching and learning due to the high number of positive cases.

The six other schools are Rukonga Vision School, Noordgrens Combined School, Rundu Junior Primary School, Andreas Kandjimi Primary School, Sarusungu Combined School and Sarusungu Junior Primary School.

Kapapero said that with St Boniface and Rukonga being boarding schools, all stakeholders who have tested positive have been isolated.

“Yes, they are in school but isolated from the ones who are not positive,” Kapapero said.

Turned away

At Noordgrens, learners who showed up for class were turned away as a result of the high number of teachers at the school currently in isolation.

All schools are expected to close on Friday and commence on 26 July for the third semester.

Kapapero said one of the challenges the region is faced with in terms of dealing with the pandemic is the issue of overcrowded classrooms, especially in Rundu.

He added that even when learners are divided into groups and take turns to go to school, the number remains large, which is not in line with the health protocol as far as fighting the pandemic.
