City cop back in court for rape

A Windhoek City Police officer accused of raping a 16-year-old girl between May and November 2019 is expected to make a second appearance in the Katutura Magistrate's Court this week.

Omar Saleem Jossob made his first appearance on 26 November 2019 before Magistrate Niina Hochobes.

The matter was postponed to this Thursday for further police investigations.

Jossob was denied bail because investigations were still at an early stage and witness statements were outstanding.

The court also ruled that it was not in the interest of justice or the public that bail be granted.

Jossob was, however, informed that he could launch a formal bail application.

Prosecutor Cleopatra Boois appeared for the State, while the accused was represented by Windhoek-based defence lawyer Joseph Garth.

Jossob was arrested in November 2019 on three counts of rape, read with the Combating of Domestic Violence Act of 2003, which also calls for a heavy punishment in the case of a conviction.

He remains in custody at the Wanaheda police station holding cells.
