The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) said its regional chairperson's job ends at regional structures, and should not extend to other matters.

This after a local newspaper reported that the multi-disciplinary National Youth Games (NYG) will take place later this year after a consultative meeting with Omusati regional sport commission chairperson Vaino Shimutwikeni.

He revealed that the games will be held from 25 to 27 September at Rietfontein and from 3 to 5 October in Swakopmund. Shimutwikeni shared that the separation of the games was to ensure that all activities take place.

NSC refutes info

However, the NSC clarified that the information regarding the scheduling of the event and venues does not represent its position.

“Our operations and scheduled events were hit hard, at times resulting in the loss of income in the form of sponsorship deals. Hence the need for proper planning and re-adjustment of our calendar events, which in turn demands well-coordinated and consented effort.

“This further demands consultation with our key shareholders to ensure that our events are properly scheduled to avoid and overlap with already planned events as this could cause a logistical and operational nightmare if not well matched,” a statement further read.

The NSC did not state which other events they had in the pipeline.

Our mandate

In addition, the statement said it should also be noted that information regarding the preparation of regional teams as per regional structured events falls within the mandate of regional chairpersons, but added that, overall, operations remain that of the NSC secretariat.

The commission further affirmed that they are in consultation with key stakeholders and strategic partners, including the sports ministry, with regards to the possibility of hosting the games.

The final decision will be made based on sporting activities allowed within the prevailing coronavirus regulations, it said.
