Blue Waters rope in SA goalie

Coastal outfit Blue Waters have confirmed the signing of former Kaizer Chiefs development player and Polokwane City goalkeeper Brian Tebogo Mpoyana on a free transfer.According to Knowledge Iipinge, an interim executive committee member of Blue Waters, the 25-year-old player flew to Namibia before the MTC Namibia Premier League transfer window closed on Friday and signed a one-year contract.Mpoyana said his move was motivated by his keen interest in Namibian football and that he wants to experience what the country can offer.Asked if he will cope in a league which fails to attract large crowds, he said that he came to do a job and would do it to the best of his ability. “It's something new. Sometimes crowds gather, sometimes they don't, but I have to do what I came for on the field,” he said.He added that he could have gone to any other club in Namibia but he chose Blue Waters and wanted to challenge the others. Mpoyana hasn't trained with the club yet, so making a debut when the side meets Tura Magic in Walvis Bay late yesterday would be farfetched.“I haven't trained yet but I wish the players all the best and hope to see them at training,” he said.“We normally don't reveal contract details of our players for obvious reasons and the nature of our league, but it is a win-win for both parties in the long term,” said Ipinge.Asked why a South African player with a lucrative South African Premier League (PSL) at home would want to ply his trade in a substandard league in Namibia, Ipinge said that it's all part of the club's strategic plan to bring back its glory days.“There is so much we need to do to bring the league at a level it deserves to be,” he said.Mpoyana previously played for Batau FC and Free State Stars (South Africa), Hanoi Football Club in Vietnam and Hawassa Kenema in Ethiopia.The player helped Batau gain promotion to the national first division in the 2009/10 season and won the City Cup in 2015. The player is also familiar with Namibian footballers such as Rudolf Bester, Hendrick Somaeb and Da Costa Angula, whom he played with at Free State Stars during the 2014/2015 PSL Season. Blue Waters lost their opening match 1-0 against newbies Young Brazilians in Karasburg, and facing Magic would be yet another mountain to climb.
