Bernard Haufiku appointed chairperson
The Namibian Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (NPBWCB) has roped in one of Namibia's top doctors.
Dr Bernard Haufiku officially took over the chairmanship of the Namibian Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (NPBWCB) in the capital on Thursday.
For the next three years, the board will be led by Haufiku as board chairperson, with Saima Nghihalwa, Trevor Mills, Maria Pogisho and Josef Shikongo as members.
They replace former chairperson Ellison Hijarunguru, Kenny Hepundjua, Ronald Kurtz, Victoria Hamunyela and Philip Mwandingi, whose term expired on 4 November 2019.
On his agenda as the incoming chairperson, Haufiku intends to do away with the clause in the Boxing and Wrestling Control Act which prohibits women from participating in boxing.
He said this clause needs to be dismantled urgently.
“Let the women decide whether they want to participate or not. Let's not keep a law prohibiting them from doing so,” said Haufiku.
Haufiku said he will further review and implement the code of conduct for board members, staff members, boxers, trainers, managers, promoters and other stakeholders.
The incoming chairperson also plans to set up various committees, including for legal affairs, medical and wellbeing, technical and professional advisory and a judge/referee committee.
Haufiku further intends to appoint independent bookkeepers and auditors and said he will begin his term by scrutinising the accounts of the previous board and making sure unaccounted or unaudited expenses are further scrutinised by auditors.
“As a new board, we need to separate things. If there's something that's under auditing, under accounting or missing, we would want to ring-fence it,” he said.
For his part, the minister of sport, youth and national service, Erastus Uutoni, urged the new board members to work together with respect and root out infighting as it will take them nowhere.
“This thing of fighting and undermining each other won't take us anywhere,” said Uutoni.
