'Beast Master' falls short
Vikapita 'Beast Master' Meroro lost an international cruiserweight 10-round title fight by unanimous decision to South Africa's Akani 'Prime' Phuzi at the Blair Gowrie Recreation Centre in the neighbouring country on Sunday.
The 34-year-old Meroro couldn't quite bring the sting needed to cause an upset against his 25-year-old opponent, who is undefeated after 10 fights.
Meroro lost to Russian boxer Dmitry Kudryashov in 2015 and then to South African Kevin Lerena in February 2017.
He suffered another defeat to Russian Maksim Vlasov in December in the same year, but defeated Mussa Ajibu of Malawi last November.
His record now stands at 37 fights, 29 wins and eight losses.
Wilberforce 'Black Mamba' Shihepo was scheduled to exchange leather with Thabiso 'The Rock' Mchunu in a non-title fight over 10 rounds, but the bout was postponed to a later date.
A pundit said some local boxers' careers are on the way to the scrapheap, if they don't make drastic changes and rekindle their hunger and drive.
“Some of these guys are now just fighting for purse money. There is no hunger or drive, compared to the younger guys, and that's really sad because some are good boxers; they are just lazy and arrogant,” said the pundit, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
