Beach Volleyball concludes
Fifteen top volleyball teams participated in last weekend's 2018 Bank Windhoek Namibia Beach Volleyball Open in Swakopmund.
Hosted by the Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF), the competing categories included the Men's, Women's, Social 2-A-Side and Mixed 4-A-Side teams.
The Men's 2-A-Side championship title went to Klaus Striewe and Conrad Johannes who won their first tournament together. They overcame Bernhard Schurz and Sebastian Poerschke in the final, to be crowned NAM Open Champions with a score of 2:0 (21:16, 21:15). Third place went to Piet Smit and Moritz Lange.
Carmen Curschmann and Rosi Hennes won the Women's 2-A-Side Championship title. They overcame Dorle Verrinder and Karin Curschmann in the final, scoring 2:0 (21:17, 21:15) to take the title. Third place went to the young pair of Maike van Doorn and Lara Luesse.
In an effort to decentralise the sport, NVF aims to move its focus away from the capital and into the regions.
They plan on hosting two beach volleyball events in Rundu and Oshakati. Details will be announced at a later stage. NVF's Director of Beach Volleyball, James Verrinder, said: “We have a very well established beach volleyball community in both the Khomas and Erongo regions and we want to work towards development in the north of Namibia, where 6-A-Side volleyball is already very popular.” “A massive 'thank you' to our main sponsor Bank Windhoek.
“It has been a pleasure working with the Bank Windhoek team again and we really appreciate the support they continue to give to volleyball in Namibia,” Verrinder added.
Other final results were:
The Social 2-A-Side final saw Hendrik Kotze and Refus Nghuyi beat Heiko von Ludwiger and
Mark Brinkmann 2:0 (21:16, 21:15). Hendrik and Refus became stronger with every game they played and won the final with their best performance over the weekend. Dave Hammond and Jorit Moisel came third.
In the Mixed 4-A-Side final, Smooth Operators beat Silent Killers 2:1 (25:23, 24:26, and 15:3). Both Swakopmund teams played great volleyball throughout the weekend and it was a very close contest in the final with the Smooth Operators edging it and took the title. Sandstorm came third.
