Backing the future of Tsumeb
Weatherly International, a holding company of the recently opened Tschudi mine, sponsored a total of N$28 000-00 to the Tsumeb Community Skills Development Foundation (COSDEC) Educational Career Fair that took place on 15July.
“It is important for us to support the community of Tsumeb especially when it comes to events that contribute significantly to the long-term sustainability of the town. Therefore, we made the decision to sponsor the Tsumeb COSDEC Educational Career Fair for the second year running,” Peter Christians, General Manager at the Tschudi Mine said.
A total of 465 learners visited the career fair. “This sponsorship enabled us to effectively promote the Educational Career Fair in Tsumeb and surrounding communities. We are proud that the career fair concluded successfully,” said Ntema Sihela, Centre Manager of the Tsumeb COSDEC.
Ten exhibitors participated in the career fair: UNAM, Namibian Police Force, Teachers Representative Council, Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Ohorongo Cement, Dundee Precious Metals, Namibia Institute of Mining Technology, Triumphant College, Schools of Air Powers and Cenored.
Apart from the exhibitors, junior and secondary schools in the Oshikoto Region and nearby towns visited the career fair including Tsumeb Secondary School, Etosha, Otjikoto, Tsumeb Gimnasium and Fredericks Awaseb, Opawa and Tsintsabis.
“I am pleased that ministries, companies in the mining sectors and training institutions participated as exhibitors on the day,” said Sihela. He also said the purpose of the educational career fair is to advise and expose grade10 and 12 learners to possible career paths and after-school programmes offered by institutions.
“As an employer in the Oshikoto region we found it imperative to support this career fair. Our employees mainly reside in Tsumeb and surrounding communities. It is just fitting that we participate and support events that target future and potential employees from the region,” explained Christians.
He further said Weatherly aligns its community initiatives according to the pillars of the Harambee Prosperity Plan, such as economic advancement and social progression.
COSDEC was established to empower community members with practical skills like business, entrepreneurship and life skills. The aim is to improve the community’s quality of life by enabling members to become either formally employed or self-employed.
