All systems go for Harders Cup
The much-anticipated second annual edition of an epic footballing contest in the vast //Karas region will take place this weekend.
Football fans in Lüderitz will be treated to a festivity of top-notch football action when 10 teams from //Kharas region take each on in the lucrative 2018 Harders Cup, scheduled to kick-off on Friday.
Established in 2017, by Tim Ekandjo, the tournament saw six clubs competing in 2017. It has now grown bigger and better with four additional teams joining the line-up.
Two teams from Keetmanshoop and one from Rosh Pinah are expected to give the Lüderitz-based clubs a run for their money, in their quest to take the trophy back to their hometowns.
While officially launching the event in February Ekandjo, who is the chief organiser, boasted it will be a spectacular, mouth-watering event with performances by NAMA winners Adora, TBoss & Staika and Gazza, alongside Tulisan and Distruction Boyz from South Africa.
In the tournament line-up are Keetmanshoop-based Real Fighters, Orange Rangers and Mountain Rangers (Rosh Pinah), who will be joining Atlanta Bucs, Atlantic Stars, Diamond City, Rush Ups, Man United, Pescanova and reigning champions Youngsters from Lüderitz that will battle it out for the grand prize of N$100 000.
The runners-up will receive N$50 000 while the third-placed team will walk away with N$20 000. The golden boot award recipient will get N$10 000.
Speaking at the February launch event at the Benguela Community Centre in Lüderitz, town mayor Hilaria Mukapuli welcomed the second edition of the cup competition.
“I was very impressed with the manner in which this initiative was introduced to Lüderitz. It was well-planned and executed and already an overwhelming success in its first year.
“I therefore have no doubt that the 2018 event will be even better and I'm happy to note the significant growth in the event's vision to become a truly regional event, which is an aggressive strategy that mirrors the chief organiser, Ekandjo,” Mukapuli said.
She urged Buchters and people from the //Karas region to support the event financially, as it is being delivered to them free of charge.
“Ekandjo and his equally capable team have shown visionary leadership and commitment towards the real meaning of the words 'social responsibility' and they must be applauded, hence events like this are of vital importance for the promotion of economic growth, job creation and the mitigation of poverty,” said the mayor.
The tourney kicks off on Saturday morning, with the town's biggest derby that will see Youngsters confront bitter rivals Atlanta Bucs.
