Action galore at FNB Classic Clashes last weekend

Staff Reporter

Over the past weekend football and rugby were played as part of the FNB Classic Clashes in Keetmanshoop, Stampriet and Windhoek.
On Friday, Suiderlig High School beat JA Nel Senior Secondary School with 3 goals to 0 in Keetmanshoop. Malakia Amutenya was crowned the Vigo Hero and Gregory Afrikaner the FNB Classic Clashes Man of the match – both from JA Nel school.
Dr Lemmer High School and MK Gertze Secondary School met on the rugby field in Windhoek and Dr Lemmer was victorious with 33 to 22 points. This match was the main-curtain raiser for the Currie Cup match between the Welwitschias and SWD Eagles at the Hage Geingob Stadium. Dr Lemmer had a well-deserved win after a hard-fought game. At Stampriet the game between the two rugby giants ended in a draw, with 31 points for both Elnatan and Windhoek High School. According to Vicky Muranda, corporate communications manager of the FNB Group, this was a well-played game.
“It was nail-biting rugby, especially when WHS led by 21-0 at halftime and Elnatan clawed their way back – a real Classic Clash of the Titans,” she said. The Vigo Heroes were Martin Jordan Orlam of MK Gertze and Gerbus van Wyk of Elnatan, while the FNB men of the match were Dennis Orlam of Dr Lemmer and PW Steenkamp of Elnatan.
The FNB Classic Clashes continued on Tuesday with a netball match between Edugate and Moria Private at Otjiwarongo. Etosha and Otjiwarongo were due to play their netball match at Tsumeb yesterday.
Rugby will be played in Mariental this weekend between Mariental Secondary School and PK de Villiers.
