21 Brigade champions crowned

On Saturday, 21 Brigade Headquarter Company stole the show and were crowned the overall winners of the 21 Brigade inter-unit sport competition in Windhoek.

The Namibian Defence Force (NDF) 21 Brigade, based at the Tobias Hainyeko garrison in Suiderhof, Windhoek held a sport event at the Katutura youth sport complex from Thursday until Saturday for its six units.

The units that took part were 21 Brigade Headquarter Company, Ceremonial Battalion, 211 Battalion, 212 Battalion, 213 Battalion and 21 Artillery Regiment. The units compete annually in various sport codes like football, netball, volleyball and pool.

The 21 Brigade Headquarter Company walked away with the most gold medals, with Gerson Mushete was named best pool player, Andreas Nuukala best goalkeeper, Gift Njenjema best soccer coach and Uaondjarure Nakambale top goal-scorer.

Dorkas Tjipetekera from Ceremonial Battalion also walked away with a gold medal, after she was crowned best netball player. The 21 Brigade Headquarter Company was also crowned football champions, while 211 Battalion won the volleyball trophy, Ceremonial Battalion won the netball trophy and 21 Artillery Regiment walked away with the pool tournament trophy.

Brigadier-General Martin Shikomba, 21 Brigade general officer commanding, said in his closing remarks the competition was introduced to keep every soldier in shape and ready for their assignments.

Shikomba encouraged the troops to embrace the training culture, as it is an important component of the military.

“The aim of this sport competition is not necessarily to play and win prizes, but to gain fitness, build team spirit, love and promote sport in the Khomas Region,” he said. The colourful event was attended by high-ranking officers and officials of the NDF.
