Pursuing a passion for creativity in the corporate world

Patricia Coetzee
Scarlette Swartbooi has worked in the banking industry for more than 11 years.

As a member of the Standard Bank family, Swartbooi’s passion for creativity has allowed her to make the most of her position as a project manager and junior user experience designer at the company.

Swartbooi has a diploma in marketing and is pursuing a degree in commerce while still taking advantage of online platforms such as Coursera to further her experience in user experience design.

“My education has been primarily self-directed through platforms such as Coursera, which is where I learned my user experience design,” Swartbooi said.

Her role as a project manager and junior user experience designer involves executing projects that enhance the bank’s various innovations, such as sustainable innovation.

Her job description does not end there; she also conducts research and uses the findings to develop feasible projects that can be implemented by the bank’s innovation department.

Creative work

She was drawn to the creative aspects of user experience designs.

“It's a creative thing to do; designing is a creative process, and I am creative,” she explained.

Swartbooi said she is grateful that her job allows her to tap into her creative side.

A recent nod by the company recognising her hard work counts among some of her proudest achievements.

“I recently won an award where my colleagues nominated me based on my performance throughout the year. For me, this was a great achievement because it felt amazing that my colleagues recognised and commended me for my work."

Never stop

Besides being ‘Scarlette from Standard Bank,’ she is also ‘Scarlette the creative’ and says that even though she loves what she does, that love exists because she is creative at heart.

“I am also Scarlette, the poet, singer, actor and overall performer,” she said.

When asked if she had any advice for the aspiring youth, she said: “Never stop learning and adding on to your experiences.”

Swartbooi believes in continuous learning and that young people should be proactive in gaining more knowledge.
