Hedwich Meyer, Chief Librarian at the National Library of Namibia, has dedicated over two decades of her life to library and information science.

Appointed to her current role in December 2020, she holds a degree in Library and Information science (LIS) from UNISA.

Meyer's journey began in 2003 when she joined the Namibia Library and Archives Service (NLAS) as a library assistant at the Ministry of Agriculture, Water & Land Reform' Information Centre (MAWLRIC). Over the years, she worked in various ministerial libraries, including the National Museum, Meteorological Survey, Katutura Intermediate Hospital, and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. She later served as senior librarian in the Kunene and Erongo regions before returning to Khomas as Chief Librarian.

Though she initially pursued Human Resource studies at the Polytechnic of Namibia, Meyer shared, "I didn’t really choose to become a librarian, but fate steered me towards it,” she said.

“I applied for a library assistant position while studying [HR], simply to work while pursuing my studies," Meyer said. Her love for reading and a desire to help others access knowledge kept her in the profession. She credits the Education and Training Sector Improvement Programme (ETSIP) for easing her educational journey.

Obstacles and advice

Throughout her career, Meyer has faced challenges, particularly advocating for the legitimacy and evolution of libraries. "The struggle to defend the legitimacy of the profession while facing threats to our status and values has been a challenge."

Meyer stated how libraries were once seen as old fashioned, with an unfriendly librarian behind the counter, but Meyer has worked to change this perception. As Head of the National Library, Meyer is focused on modernising libraries and securing funding for resources.

"I strive to improve and evolve libraries, moving away from the traditional path while demystifying the stigma surrounding them," she said.

Her goal is to create an innovative, welcoming environment for users.

Her advice to aspiring librarians is to engage with the community, embrace technology and stay informed on library trends. "Professional development, strong reference skills, and engagement with users is also key to success."

Outside of work, Meyer enjoys quiet hobbies like reading, writing, and listening to music, believing these activities help her recharge.
