As an HR professional, I've seen what makes a job application stand out and what can hold candidates back. Whether you're just starting your career or looking for a new opportunity, knowing how to present yourself effectively is crucial. In this article, I'll share some key tips to help you make a lasting impression and increase your chances of landing the job you want.1. When a vacant position is advertised: Read through the job description and requirements, then highlight your experience on your CV that is specific to the job requirements outlined.2. Should you choose to use your personal picture on the CV, ensure it’s a professional photo. Do not send a selfie picture or an unprofessionally set-up photo.3. Ensure your CV is updated: Before sending through your CV, update your latest qualifications, new skills gained, etc.4.Depending on your work experience, keep your CV short and to the point. - Ensure your CV is neatly represented. 2. When you submit your CV -5. Always follow the instructions on the advert on how to submit your CV: Should the CV be sent via e-mail or hand delivered, or can it be sent using both methods? While a lot of companies only use online platforms, many people tend not to follow the instructions on how to submit applications and hand-deliver CVs, which in many cases leads to their application being overlooked.6 .Your CV should be a PDF; do not screen print pages of your CV and send it to the recruiters.7. When called for an interview, prepare yourself. You should look presentable – first impressions count. Research the company that invited you, call and talk to current employees if you have to. When you do your homework, you will feel more at ease when you meet the interviewers. Study your CV again; you should be able to explain what you wrote.8. During the interview: Being nervous is normal; do not stress. Even the well-seasoned interviewers get nervous during interviews. Breathe and take your time to answer questions. Honesty is still the best policy. Be yourself; most interviewers know when the answers are AI or Google copies. The unemployment rate in Namibia is very high and we compete with so many people in the job market. You must set yourself apart by enhancing your soft skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to be trained.
