Embracing career growth
David Nalusha started his journey at Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) in February 2017 as a supervisor in the packaging department, and propelled his career by working closely with the production process operators.
In April 2022, he was promoted to unit manager for the can line in the same department. Nalusha describes his promotion as a great opportunity to collaborate with the rest of the production leadership team to successfully implement and execute production assignments.
After matriculating from high school, he obtained a technical qualification in the electrical field from the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT), and continued his studies in the same field at the College of Cape Town in South Africa. In addition to his technical credentials, he has a certificate in supply chain management from the University of Cape Town. Adding onto his qualifications, he regularly upskills by attending courses to keep abreast with the latest trends in his field. He recently earned a certificate in total productive maintenance and quality systems through the Alison online education platform. Currently, he is looking to start the managers development programme at Stellenbosch University to enhance his leadership skills.
A new position
On his promotion, Nalusha said he was able to align with and transition into his new role smoothly.
“Knowing that my efforts have been noticed and that my employer has entrusted me to lead a team is incredibly exciting. In my new role, I am required to strategise, mentor and delegate tasks to my team members, and with these key skills, I am gradually gaining confidence in my abilities”, he said.
Some of the new roles he took on in this position include the primary duty to ensure that his team has the necessary tools to fulfill their daily tasks. He is required to actively participate in weekly meetings for production planning and is responsible for interacting with all necessary parties to guarantee that quality production targets are fulfilled.
“My new position also requires me to create and maintain the unit's annual budget. As a unit manager, I must now demonstrate innovation by suggesting ways to streamline the manufacturing process, but more significantly, I must use coaching techniques to encourage and guide not only my team, but the entire packaging workforce,” Nalusha said.
“Working for NBL has taught me to collaborate with a diverse set of people. Seeing us maintain a strong family culture, work collectively to deliver a quality product for our consumers, continuously learn and still have fun is what makes NBL a great place to work.”
He lists Mike Tyson’s quote “God lets everything happen for a reason. It’s all a learning process and you have to go from one level to another” as one of his favourites.
