Bank Windhoek has appointed Hugo Capelao as the head of business reengineering, effective 1 January.

Capelao began his journey at Bank Windhoek in 2015 as a business analyst before progressing to business analyst lead and ultimately to his current position.

He will be responsible for reengineering Bank Windhoek’s business processes, leading and mentoring a team of business analysts and reducing process variance by adopting standardisation where applicable.

With over a decade of experience in the finance and information technology (IT) industry, Capelao holds a bachelor of IT degree in business computing from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) and two professional diplomas in digital transformation management and digital business analysis from the University College Dublin: Professional Academy.

Additionally, he has completed a management development programme at the University of Stellenbosch Business School and various specialised short courses in areas such as artificial intelligence, corporate innovation and systems thinking.

Before joining Bank Windhoek, he worked in IT services and in banking, where he held various positions and gained expertise in several retail banking areas, including automated teller machines (ATMs), point-of-sale, foreign exchange and customer services.

Unique perspective

Capelao said he always seeks to adopt new skills and methodologies with his team to achieve Bank Windhoek’s reengineering objectives.

“I plan to engage with various business units to better understand their specific process reengineering requirements and goals. The prioritised processes will then be reengineered, leveraging new and emerging technologies where possible and in accordance with Bank Windhoek’s customer-centric service culture," he said.

“Ultimately, this role will focus on enhancing the organisation’s process management and reengineering capabilities, promoting a continuous improvement and reengineering culture and elevating overall process maturity in alignment with the organisational strategy,” he added.

Throughout his career, Capelao said he acquired domain knowledge and technical expertise in business analysis, process design and reengineering, particularly within the banking sector.

“This combination of business analysis skills and hands-on experience in banking operations provides me with a unique perspective that enhances my ability to identify opportunities for improvement in business processes that drive operational excellence," he said.

Outside of his corporate setting, Capelao is a keen reader who prioritises spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoys staying updated with the latest developments in technology, such as artificial intelligence.
