To groove or to study

In recent months, the ‘groove lifestyle’ has become popular amongst the youth. This lifestyle is definitely one every young person has to experience, but is balance possible?

Groove is a lifestyle of going out to search for a vibe at either a club or a lounge. The popular groove places in Windhoek are The Catch, The Brewers Market, Chicago’s, Trinity Lounge and many more.

In your late teenage and early adult years, this is definitely something you want to experience, however, the youth of today have turned it into a bit of a bad habit. Every weekend they are at groove or at a house chill and don’t prioritise what is important - their education.

It is very important to create a balance between your grove life and your school life because you will never concentrate on both; there is always something that will receive less attention, and many folks have proved that this is usually school.

A wise man once said: “A party will be there forever and they are forever evolving, however, you just have a few chances to prove yourself at school”. This is why attention really needs to be paid at school.

You can start off by prioritising what’s important. If you have a lot of school activities that need your attention, you need to put that first and leave the going out for a few weekends. You also need to understand that it is not necessary to go out every weekend, because you are also using money that you could have saved, or starting very unhealthy spending habits.

As a student or learner, you need to manage your time after you have prioritised and put the important things at the top of your schedule. Once you have done that, you will realise how you are using your time, which will make you more progressive in school.

Use groove as a reward to yourself. When you’ve spent a lot of time on your schoolwork and you’ve done everything, you will realise that you now have a lot of time on your schedule and you can now reward yourself with a night out. This should, however, only come once in a while and should not become a habit.

As a young individual, you will definitely want to experience life to the fullest, but sometimes you might just be burning your bridges because a lot of companies nowadays do background checks and you do not want to end up not being hired due to grooving.
