Roselinda Matyayi (14), better known as Rose, is already making waves in the Namibian swimming scene.Rose is a grade 9 learner at St. George's Diocesan School. Her swimming journey began at the age of six when she unexpectedly discovered her passion while watching her younger brother's swimming lessons.Enrolled at the Aqua Swimming and Fitness Club under the Namibia Aquatic Swimming Federation (NASFED), Rose quickly progressed, skipping the beginner stages with ease. Her competitive journey took off when she started participating in galas, which took place throughout the year.By the age of eight, Rose had already broken her first record in an Individual Medley (IM) at a gala in Oranjemund. That same year, during the Short Course (SC) Nationals in Swakopmund, she set six national records in the U/8 category, marking the beginning of her dominance in Namibian swimming.From 2021 to 2024, Rose has consistently claimed the Junior Victrix Ludorum titles at the SC Nationals. Although details about her upcoming competition remain under wraps, Rose acknowledges the challenges and excitement that come with competing at this level. Her ultimate dream is to one day represent Namibia at the Olympics.Preparing for such high level competition requires consistent training, so she dedicates up to two hours per day from Monday to Saturday to swimming, with additional dryland morning sessions twice a week for strength and conditioning.‘’Roselinda has an exceptional work ethic. She is always the first to arrive and gives her best in every session. Her positive attitude towards challenges and growth sets her apart,” says Coach Jean Michael Leitner, who has been a huge influence on her development.Behind her success is a strong support system, including her parents, siblings, her Aqua family, coaches and friends.“As parents, we motivate Rose by reminding her to give her best in everything she does. Whether in class or on the pool deck. We encourage her to rely on God’s strength, and this has helped her maintain a well-balanced life,” her parents Olivia and Tinus Matyayi say.Rose attributes her talent and resilience to God, often drawing strength from Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."To young athletes and aspiring swimmers, Rose offers these words of encouragement: “Keep going, never give up, and know that God is with you.”With her determination and faith, Rose is undoubtedly a name to keep watching out for in the Namibian swimming arena.
