Lohmann learns from the best at Scottish golf clinic
Invited to enjoy immersive collegiate preparatory programme
The grade 11 scholar from Saint Paul's College in Windhoek was selected by the Namibia Junior Golf Foundation to attend the six-day Congaree Foundation programme for the 2023 Congaree Global Golf Initiative.
Charles Lohmann, who left the country last week to attend a golf clinic in Scotland, returned on Monday.
The grade 11 scholar from Saint Paul’s College in Windhoek was selected by the Namibia Junior Golf Foundation to attend the six-day Congaree Foundation programme for the 2023 Congaree Global Golf Initiative (CGGI).
"The trip was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I got to play on a few world-class links courses, which are much different from those in Namibia. I also got advice from many professionals regarding my golf game, mental approach, and how to receive a scholarship to study and play golf in America. I made many new friends from several countries, and the clinic was very well led by the great Congaree team," said Lohmann.
What it is
The 2023 CGGI is an immersive collegiate preparatory programme tailored to high school students from the US and abroad with ambitions to play golf at the collegiate level. During CGGI, selected participants are invited to attend an all-expense-paid, one-week summer session at Congaree. The programme is designed to provide CGGI participants with the highest level of golf coaching, academic counselling, mentorship, and ongoing support to enhance their opportunities for success when applying to college.
"The Congaree initiative indicated that most CGGI participants (students who attended the clinics) in the first four clinics (classes) held over four years received golf scholarship offers from accredited four-year American colleges and universities, and 95% enrolled in college."
Considered nominees
Lohmann said CGGI priority consideration is given to nominees who are rising 11th-grade high school students for the 2023 academic year; have limited resources and financial means to pursue a college education in the United States; excel in the classroom and are committed to receiving a college education; demonstrate the ability to play golf at the collegiate level; and are proficient in English.
"The week ended with a tournament called The Congaree Cup, held on Friday, where all the students played against each other. I shot a score of 73 and came second in that tournament."
