What was a dream for so many learners of Augustinium Secondary School and the Havana Project finally became a reality on 25 February, when learners met ministers and parliamentarians face-to-face.

Eiases Stephany, Ekandjo Elina, Uugwanga Rebecca, Katangolo Reinhold, Grace Ekandjo, Mwanyekele Johanna, Swartbooi Pharrell, Elungu Wilhelmina, Van Wyk Christine, Ndeulyatele Matheus, and Witbooi Ricky, who are all currently in grade 11 at Augustineum Secondary School, were given the rare opportunity to attend a parliamentary hearing. They were able to witness first-hand the inner workings of the Namibian parliament and engage in discussions with government officials about the education system in the country.

One of the most memorable moments of the visit was when the finance minister Ipumbu Shiimi presented the education budget to parliament. The learners gained a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in budgeting for a national institution and the importance of adequate funding for education.

The top achievers were also tasked with preparing speeches outlining their ideas for improving the education system in Namibia. This exercise challenged them to think critically about the issues facing the education sector and develop practical solutions. Elina Ekandjo reflected on the experience, noting that she had previously underestimated the hard work and dedication required of ministers and parliamentarians.

Greater understanding

Rudolf Matengu, the principal of Augustineum Secondary School, commended the learners for their exceptional performance and expressed his pride in seeing them seize such unique opportunities. He emphasised the importance of education as a pathway to success and encouraged all learners to strive for excellence in their studies.

The visit to parliament was not only an educational experience for the learners but also a motivational one. It served as a reminder of the endless possibilities that come with hard work and dedication. The top achievers now have their sights set on meeting and engaging with the head of state, a dream that is within reach with continued academic success.

Overall, the visit to parliament was a transformative experience for the learners of Augustineum Secondary School. It broadened their horizons, deepened their understanding of governance, and inspired them to aim for greater heights in their academic pursuits. As they return to their classrooms with a renewed sense of purpose, these top achievers are sure to serve as role models for their peers and inspire a new generation of learners to reach for the stars.
