For the love of helping people
My name is Eben-Ezer Angula and I am a second-year nursing student at Welwitchia Health Training Centre (WHTC). I’ve always been quite vocal about my dreams and aspirations, and as a young child those dreams always involved helping others. Initially, I wanted to study medicine, but as life would have it, I guess it wasn’t my time just yet - although I still hope to pursue a career in medicine someday.
I realised I could help people just the same through this nursing degree, that’s why I chose to study nursing first. I’m currently finishing up my second year and it has been going well. I’ve acquired a plethora of new skills and knowledge along the way. Despite it being difficult, it’s fun as well - mainly also because there aren’t many male nurses out there and it’s refreshing to take on a new role.
Furthermore, there have been many successes during my studies. I’ve gotten the chance to work with many different types of people, therefore culturally expanding my view, and I’m learning new skills on a daily basis, which is great for future endeavours.
However, the challenging part is most probably the workload one has to get under the belt - not only theory, but the practical part as well. We student nurses have to undergo a lot of training and simulations to properly be able to do the work we do and that can sometimes be exhausting.
In addition, the practical hours in the hospital do sometimes drain you, but overall, one must be passionate about everything they’re doing in life and see it through. I aim to excel at this degree and work my way through to one day pursuing more careers in health.
For any young person thinking about pursuing a career as a nurse, I'd advise them to not make hasty decisions about their choice of studies. I unfortunately still live under the pressures of being either a doctor or a lawyer or what-not, but people should think about the long run and the hours of sweating that need to be put in.
Those who wish to pursue nursing should do so with the thought of helping people in mind. Do not do something you fully know you can’t handle. Our adults must ensure their adolescents think hard about what they want to do. Nursing is hard work and requires self-sacrifice and thinking of other people’s well-being, so people should consider whether they can handle it or not. Doing something because you can and because you care about it are two different things. I also advise more men to pursue nursing if it is a passion of theirs.
