The results of the National Secondary Senior Certificate Ordinary level (NSSCO) and Advanced Subsidiary level (NSSCAS) were announced by the minister of education, arts and culture Anna Nghipondoka yesterday morning. The speech painted a picture of improvement in nearly every single metric used by the education ministry.

Nearly 53.7% of learners that wrote the national examination last year have graded high enough to qualify for a degree or diploma at an institution of higher learning. This represents a 4.9 percentage point increase from 48.8% in 2023.

AS Levels

29.5% of the 2024 ordinary level candidates have qualified to advance to the AS level this year. This is an improvement of 4.3 percentage points from the 2023 candidates.

“To qualify for the Advance Subsidiary Level, each candidate must achieve at least a Grade C in a minimum of three subjects that are offered at AS level,” Nghipondoka explained.

Every year more and more candidates have qualified for AS levels since its inception at 18.5% in 2020.

Notable improvements

Nghipondoka gave the results for related subjects by field of study. For the science subjects, learners that received a letter grade above a D (50%) have increased. The same is true for commerce subjects, social science subjects, European first languages, pre-vocational subjects, and African first languages.

Notably, the biggest improvement of 9.7 percentage points from 2023 to 2024 in learners with a D or above was seen in the commerce field subjects. 100% of learners with European languages - German, Afrikaans and English - passed the subject as well.

The only subject field that saw a decrease in D symbols and above was Afrikaans and English as second languages. The percentage decreased from 70.2% to 58.9% from 2023 to 2024. Only 2% of learners did not pass the subjects compared to the 1.5% of 2023. The ministry has noted that they will investigate the cause of this decrease further and hope to improve the language proficiency.

Part-time concerns

While the 40 757 full-time learners experienced good results, the 39 002 part-time learners had a less rosy time.

Mathematics and physics showed improvement, but many other subjects lagged behind. The average number of learners with a D grade or higher in part-time subjects increased by 1 percentage point to 43%, but more learners - 6.5%, up from 5.4% in 2023 - did not receive a grade.

“The ministry is concerned about the performance of part-time candidates,” Nghipondoka said. She further mentioned that the ministry will carry out an analysis on the teaching at these part-time centres.

Top Performers

The top-achieving candidate for the NSSCO level for 2024 is Jolisa Garises from Rukonga Vision School. Hofni Hangula from Onawa Secondary School was the top performer for the NSSCAS level for last year. Both winners will receive a laptop from the ministry for their performance.

Rukonga Vision school from the Kavango East region was the best performing public school for both Ordinary and AS levels. They also received this title last year.

Canisinum Roman Catholic School returned to once again claim the title of best performing private school for AS levels. They also climbed from second place to claim this title for Ordinary levels.

The Oshikoto region is the best performing region for ordinary levels - dethroning Khomas. In fact, the Khomas region dropped to eighth place as the northern regions performed very well in 2024.
