TotalEnergies' exploration to expand

Augetto Graig
TotalEnergies Exploration and Production Namibia has applied for the amendment and renewal of its environmental clearance certificate for an expanded seismic survey pogramme in licence block 2912 and 2913B in the off-shore Orange Basin in Namibian waters. The company is the holder of two exploration licences for each of the blocks 2912 and 2913B.

It holds a clearance certificate and approved environmental and social management plan for a three-dimensional (3D) seismic survey, as of 29 June 2021, over a portion of Blocks 2912 and 2913B, which expired yesterday. TotalEnergies wants that clearance extended.

It provides for the undertaking of a 3D seismic survey covering a part of Blocks 2912 and 2913B, which the international oil giant wants to amend to cover the full extent of licence Blocks 2912 and 2913B, a total area of 18 170 square kilometres.

This would allow for TotalEnergies to acquire further detailed seismic data across multiple survey periods in the previously authorised survey areas, as well as the remaining extent of the blocks not yet surveyed. The company has also applied to add the option of undertaking ocean bottom node surveys to acquire further fine-scale 3D seismic data.

The proposed amendments and specifically to the project description covers undertaking of an expanded 3D seismic survey programme, and the use of more modern survey technology.

Members of the public have until 12:00 today to make comments or provide input regarding the renewal and the expansion of TotalEnergies’ exploration activities. Comments can be submitted on the ministry of environment, forestry and tourism website or emailed to SLR, the relevant environmental consulting organisation, at [email protected], the dedicated email address.

SMS and WhatsApp responses can also be sent to 081 357 2109.
