SA’s Formula 1 bid deadline extended to March
The deadline for South Africa’s Formula 1 Grand Prix bid submission has been extended to 18 March, giving stakeholders more time to refine their proposals.
The Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture, in collaboration with the F1 Bid Steering Committee, announced the extension to ensure a transparent and competitive bidding process.
Since the publication of the Request for Expression of Interest, there has been significant enthusiasm and engagement from prospective bidders.
“We are pleased that the Minister has concurred and approved the extension of the submission date ... from 31 January 2025 to 18 March 2025,” says steering committee chair Bakang Lethoko.
“Our priority as the committee is to ensure that the country presents ... a comprehensive, sustainable and financially viable case for the F1 Grand Prix’s return to South Africa [in 2027].
“As the Bid Committee, we are excited and encouraged by the responses and interest shown thus far and are extremely hopeful that the process will deliver a compelling proposal for the F1 to consider and approve.”
Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie reiterated the importance of hosting the event.
“Hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix would boost our economy, tourism and development while showcasing South Africa as a premier global sporting destination,” he said.
“This extension ensures bidders have the time to prepare exceptional proposals.”
