15% VAT refund for foreigners on goods bought in SA
VAT Refund Agency has been appointed as the official VAT Recovery Administrator by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) to facilitate VAT refunds of 15% for qualifying purchasers, including tourists and foreign enterprises. The appointment is effective April 1, 2023.
VAT Refund Agency is committed to assisting qualifying international visitors in recovering the value-added tax (VAT) paid on their purchases made in South Africa. “As the official Vat Recovery Administrator, we aim to create awareness and educate our target audience, which includes international travellers, about the VAT refund process.”

Foreign companies and individuals can claim their 15% VAT refund by providing the required documentation. For foreign companies, the required documentation includes company name, phone number, registration number, email, and details of the person claiming on behalf of the company. For individuals, the required documentation includes an original tax invoice, passport with an entry stamp, and proof of exporting goods through a designated commercial port or airport in South Africa.
