N$1.3 billion road upgrade to transform Khorixas-Kamanjab route
Works and transport minister Veikko Nekundi has announced the long-awaited upgrade of the 105-kilometre gravel road between Khorixas and Kamanjab to a tarred surface, a move welcomed by communities in the Kunene region.
The announcement was made during a stakeholder consultation meeting held in Khorixas on Tuesday, attended by officials from the ministry, the Roads Authority and traditional leaders.
Valued at over N$1.3 billion, the project is scheduled to commence on 15 May and is expected to be completed by December 2027.
The upgrade forms part of Phase 2 of the MR 44 – Swakopmund-Henties Bay and MR 76 – Henties Bay-Uis-Kamanjab strategic road corridor.
Construction will begin at the Kamanjab settlement heading toward Khorixas. Nekundi confirmed that the project will create around 300 job opportunities for locals and involve 20 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from the area.
Zhong Mei Engineering Group has been appointed as the main contractor, while Tulipamwe Consulting Engineers will oversee the project as consultants.
