Swapo the only 'real' and 'tested’ party – Mbumba
Star rally features manifesto promises
President Nangolo Mbumba has once again highlighted the party's plans for the next five years if Swapo is voted into power again.
President Nangolo Mbumba on Sunday said Swapo is the only party bringing tried-and-tested governance experience to the ballot box in November.
He made these remarks at a Swapo star rally in Swakopmund, following another that had taken place in Walvis Bay.
“We are a real party, putting up a candidate, a real candidate, a tested member of the party since 1974. Which other party has a candidate who was a minister, a member of the central committee and a member of parliament for so many years?" he asked the crowed.
"Someone who was a foreign minister, a minister of environment and tourism, a vice-president of both the party and now of the government? Tell me who else is saying they want to be president of this country, but has never occupied any one of these senior positions?”
He told rally attendees that Swapo and its leadership “has earned its trust through the test of time.”
“We are not Johnny-come-latelies to the arena of governance. Instead, we are pioneers who have worked with vigour, purpose and patriotism over the past 34 years as a governing party. The Namibia you see today is because of the hard work and dedication of our party cadres and all patriotic citizens. For those who like to cast aspersions on the pedigree of the Swapo Party leadership and our successes since independence, all I can tell you is that history never remembers critics.”
Namibians’ welfare
Mbumba further said the party's manifesto contains concrete plans.
“It does not contain pie-in-the-sky promises. There are no unrealistic pledges. Rather, it outlines what Swapo has achieved over the past 34 years and what we plan to do in the next five years to further consolidate the welfare of Namibians."
He said the party is focused on the "bread-and-butter issues that affect the daily lives of our people."
He added that the party intends to "allocate more resources over five years to priority projects that will create mass employment opportunities for our unemployed graduates and other Namibians looking for jobs and provide more financial support to the National Youth Fund to empower youths to embark on various enterprises."
Attendees were told the party further plans to boost consumption of locally produced products, especially in government schools, hospitals and Namibian Defence Force bases.
“We will provide and improve teacher benefits, including accommodation and transport allowances, to attract skilled personnel to peri-urban and rural areas. We will revive the national airline under very well-thought-out strategies to avoid the pitfalls of the past. We will upgrade national sports facilities, including the Independence Stadium, to enable the national teams to play on their home ground.”
Vulnerable members of society
The president further said the party aims to construct basic and international sports facilities across the country and strengthen and increase coverage of orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs), old-age pensions, disability and veteran grants.
“We plan to develop and implement the Targeted Basic Income Grant (TBIG) to care for the most vulnerable members of our society who do not qualify for the current social grants. We will implement the National Minimum Wage Policy to ensure fair compensation and decent wages," he said.
Moreover, the manifesto outlines plans to reduce the prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) and increase protection for women and girls.
He said the manifesto outlines the party’s intention to service at least 10 000 plots annually for the construction of low- and medium-cost houses.
