Swakop Uranium has donated N$200 000 to the government’s National Emergency Disaster Relief Fund to assist efforts by the government to support those whose lives have been affected by the floods in northern Namibia. The donation took place on Thursday last week in Swakopmund.

Swakop Uranium CEO Qiu Bin said the mine is aware that the government, despite many challenges, has been able to assist its citizens, as thousands of Namibians have been displaced by the floods this year.

“It is for this reason that Swakop Uranium has decided to make a contribution of N$200 000 to the National Emergency Disaster Relief Fund to assist the government with its humanitarian efforts to provide relief to the affected people,” Qiu said.

Erongo region governor Neville Andre and Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila were present at the handover of the funds last week.

Praising efforts to help

Qiu said the mine acknowledges and commends the Namibian government’s sound leadership since independence and said Swakop Uranium is thankful for a positive relationship between the government and the company over the years.

“Our ‘life of mine’ will continue for another 20 years as we continue with further exploration. This will allow us to build a positive legacy for the country as a good corporate citizen,” he said.

Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila commended the mine’s willingness to assist the government to enable it to help those affected by the floods.

“It is indeed inspiring that we are not only meeting our milestones as an investment, but that this act shows an appreciation and the importance of corporate social responsibility, because it is not only responsible for solidarity, but corporate entities will prosper where they are able to assist the communities where they are invested to also prosper. There can be no prosperity in the midst of poverty.”
