Still no luck tracing Omuthiya escapees
News in short
Five of the 11 men who escaped from the Omuthiya police holding cells on 31 August have yet to be rearrested - 46 days later.
This was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner Wynand Hermanus Neels of the Oshikoto police, who yesterday said the five men are still on the run. “After we rearrested the six suspects, we are still looking for the remaining five,” he said.
The inmates had been detained on various charges ranging from theft, rape and attempted murder to fraud, assault of a police officer and drug possession. It is still unclear how they got hold of metal objects to orchestrate the jailbreak, which saw them making a hole in the wall.
Five were promptly rearrested. The sixth suspect was arrested in Rundu in the Kavango East Region.
This was the first time inmates escaped from the Oshikoto police headquarters since the N$280 million facility was inaugurated in 2018.
