QKR Navachab to construct medical centre
QKR Navachab Gold Mine has unveiled plans to establish a state-of-the-art medical centre in Karibib. This ambitious project aims to address critical healthcare needs identified through comprehensive community consultations.
Through a rigorous needs assessment conducted in collaboration with stakeholders like the Karibib Town Council and the health ministry, the necessity for an enhanced healthcare facility became apparent. The project is set to redefine healthcare accessibility in Karibib and its environs.
Services at the medical centre will range from trauma care, rehabilitation, imaging, maternity, orthopaedics and psychiatric services.
QKR Navachab mine public relations officer, McLyn Kasale, said the project is currently still in the preparatory phase, with geotechnical assessments completed. Surveying and architectural design processes are underway, which are expected to be completed and finalised by the end of May.
“The idea is not to replicate the services offered by the existing clinic or the Usakos Hospital. The intention is to build a facility that will attend to the special needs of communities nationwide,” he explained.
Far-ranging community support
Kasale said the medical centre represents a cornerstone of Navachab's corporate social investment strategy, which prioritises six key pillars: infrastructure, education, health, entrepreneurship/job creation, safety and security and ad hoc support.
“Through significant financial contributions and collaborative efforts, Navachab continues to spearhead transformative projects, such as electrification initiatives, infrastructure upgrades and support for local entrepreneurs,” Kasale said.
Over the past two years, the mine has spent more than N$15 million on community upliftment projects such as the provision of water at Spitzkoppe and New Schwaben, the donation of police vehicles, the maintenance of police vehicles in Karibib and Usakos, the upgrading of the hostel at Karibib Private School, the donation of a standby generator at the Karibib Medical Centre, among other projects.
“We are extremely proud of our flagship project, the Golden Egg, through which we are currently supporting local entrepreneurs to the value of over N$2 million. The Uis informal settlement electrification is a N$4.5 million project to which Navachab will contribute N$3 million, while the Karibib Town Council will cover the remaining N$1.5 million. The Otjimbingwe mortuary will cost N$3.5 million, and construction will commence at the end of May. And finally, we are supporting the construction of traffic lights to ease traffic flow in the town at a cost of about N$1.5 million,” he said.
