Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila says in order to ensure equitable economic growth and development, local authorities need to promote business activities across the country and specifically nurture indigenous businesses.

Kuugongelwa-Amadhila was speaking at the opening of the third Tsandi Annual Trade Fair and Expo 2023 on Monday.

She said the event demonstrates the commitment of the local authority to leverage the mechanism of the expo to promote local businesses and the development of its town, following in the footsteps of other more established towns.

“Local authorities are key stakeholders in national development. They deliver key services to communities and businesses. At times, these efforts are constrained by inadequate resources. Therefore, these efforts of investment promotion are commendable, as increased businesses complement the capacities of local authorities to develop their economies and provide employment to their residents.”

Be innovative

The prime minister added that an increase in the presence of businesses also means an increase in the demand for services. This, she said, will require investment in public infrastructure and the capacity of local authorities.

“This in turn necessitates innovative financing and project delivery models to leverage private sector finance and technical capacity to expedite the implementation of urgent strategic initiatives in order to support the growth of the local economy, create jobs, and improve services to the residents,” Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said.

She called on local authorities and public enterprises to leverage innovative funding models to expedite the realisation of agreed-upon public interventions. This, she said, becomes more important now given the reduced public revenue, which limits government’s ability to provide financial support to local authorities.

Growth applauded

Urban and rural development minister Erastus Uutoni applauded the village council for its initiative, which he said will help market and grow Tsandi.

“This is yet another milestone for Tsandi village council because this is happening not so long after I was here on 10 July this year to hand over 33 houses built by NHE to families in this community. They ticked off a very important item from their list of basic needs, as they now have a decent shelter to call their own for generations to come,” Uutoni said.

He said the expo will boost the village's local economy by creating a platform for local businesses and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and also by attracting investors to invest in Tsandi in terms of property development.

Uutoni encouraged the council to strive towards improvements in physical infrastructure via public-private partnerships.

“At this expo and through various exhibitions, we will also be presented with an opportunity to learn about the products and services and investment opportunities available at this unique village that is strategically located,” he said.
