Kooper hailed as ‘champion of genocide reparation fight’
The chief of the Kai-//Khaun clan at Hoachanas, Simon Kooper, died on Monday afternoon after a short illness.
President Hage Geingob yesterday described Chief Simon Kooper of the Kai-//Khaun clan at Hoachanas – who died on Monday – as a champion of the genocide reparation fight.
Kooper died after a short illness on Monday afternoon.
No official statement on the chief’s death was released as of late yesterday, with the Nama Traditional Leaders Association saying it needs to meet with the chief’s family first before any announcements can be made.
Geingob yesterday said: “It is with sadness that I have learnt about the passing of Chief Simon Petrus Kooper of the Kai-//Khaun clan at Hoachanas and chairperson of the Nama Traditional Leaders Association”.
“The passing is a great loss to the Kai-//Khaun clan, which he served diligently as their leader.”
Vocal champion
The president said Kooper will be remembered as “one of the vocal champions on the issue of genocide and restorative justice and stood firmly for what he believed in”.
“As a nation, we have lost a community leader who worked tirelessly towards social justice and socio-economic development.”
“On behalf of the Namibian people, I wish to extend my condolences to the children, the bereaved family, the Kai-//Khaun clan and the entire Nama Traditional Leaders Association. Let us accept God’s wish during this hour of grief and may we find solace in His Word.”
