Ovinjange community project gets N$88 000 boost
August 26 Logistics has donated over N$80 000 to a community project making an impact in the Kunene Region.
The Ovinjange community project, which falls under the non-profit organisation Omiti Planting, was spearheaded by University of Namibia (Unam) academics Rui Tyitende and Dr Ellison Tjirera. The initiative aims to tackle the long-standing challenges of water scarcity and food insecurity in Ovinjange village, situated about 15 kilometres from Opuwo.
Tyitende and Tjirera said they are passionate about bringing positive change and alleviating suffering in the community, adding that - with this donation, which totals N$88 713 - vital water surveying will be undertaken, while a borehole will also be drilled.
“Instead of criticising the government for not doing enough, find a way of using your skills to contribute," Tyitende urged.
Project phases
According to a press release, the project's first phase will establish a reliable water source, giving Ovinjange residents access to clean water for personal and livestock consumption. The second phase will set up a community garden. "This garden will enable the community to grow crops, provide food security and generate income by cultivating cash crops," it read.
At a handover ceremony, August 26 Logistics acting managing director Alpha Nekomba highlighted the importance of the company's corporate social responsibility arm, Chains of Kindness.
“Chains of Kindness was recently launched to reach out to communities and make a meaningful difference, especially in food production. Supporting the Ovinjange project is a natural fit for our goals: To promote sustainable development and improve the livelihood of locals."
Replicate success
Tyitende and Tjirera said Kunene is one of the most drought-affected regions in the country, and desperately needs assistance. This project marks as the beginning of an ongoing initiative that aims to impact the lives of Ovinjange residents positively, they added.
Meanwhile, August 26 Logistics has called for other corporate or institutional assistance to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
“We can only do this with the assistance from corporate entities or institutions that have an interest in the socioeconomic well-being of the most vulnerable societies. We thank August 26 Logistics for supporting us in such an impactful manner,” Tjirera said.
He added that they plan to replicate the success of the project in other areas of the country facing similar challenges.
