Oshikoto leaders bemoan bad roads in region
Oshikoto regional governor Penda Ya Ndakolo hosted works minister John Mutorwa earlier this month to discuss and inspect road conditions in the region.
The meeting forms part of the regional council’s strategy to place stakeholder engagement at the centre stage of its operations in a quest to address the challenges confronting the region.
Ya Ndakolo said the council has received numerous queries and complaints from residents regarding the poor road conditions and the lack of proper road networks.
“As a result, council has been doing all it can with the limited resources at its disposal and within the parameters of its mandate to ensure that the issue reaches the relevant authorities and is addressed.”
Not blaming anyone
He urged Mutorwa and the Roads Authority (RA) to go back to the drawing board, strategise and work closely with regional leadership to address the issue.
“We are not here to blame anyone; however, our region is in dire need of proper road networks for easy access and improved service delivery.
"Our people are suffering. Several consultations were held with various stakeholders on the status of roads in the region but nothing has been done to date,” he said.
Diversify contractors
Meanwhile, Mutorwa raised concerns over having one road contractor for all five northern regions - Oshikoto, Ohangwena, Oshana, Omusati and Kunene.
He said this approach by RA delays the process of constructing, upgrading and rehabilitating roads in these regions.
