Oshana police fed up with drunk drivers

Tuyeimo Haidula
Oshana regional police commander, commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria, has issued a stern warning to drivers that drunk driving will not be tolerated in the region so as to ensure the safety of all road users.Since the start of the year, Oshana police have made 92 arrests for drunk driving offences.

Oshana police spokesperson inspector Thomas Aiyambo said this is more than the 64 people arrested for driving under the influence during the festive season.

Sakaria’s warning comes after a 36-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Ongwediva for trying to bribe a police officer with N$1 000 to release his friend, an Angolan citizen, from custody. The suspect refused to have a breathalyser taken.

“We do not want drunk drivers on the road for the safety of our people. Let us all be responsible citizens,” Aiyambo said.

Work together

Sakaria reiterated that their goal is to root out and reduce crime in the region.

He urged communities to work together with the police to ensure that this goal is achieved.

“We cannot do it alone. It requires cooperation between the police and members of the community.

Support

On Monday, Aiyambo also urged new mothers to ensure they get help to look after their babies.

This is after the police confirmed that a baby boy who was found dead by his mother last Thursday at Oshikweyo village died of suffocation.

The baby was one year and three months old.
