Oshakati to electrify 770 Onawa plots
Urban upgrades reviewed
The Oshakati town council has successfully formalised several of the town's informal settlements.
The Oshakati town council has announced the appointment of Oshakati Premier Electric to service 770 erven in Onawa with overhead electrical infrastructure.
During the launch of the budget for the 2023-2024 financial year last week, Oshakati mayor Leonard Hango said the aim is to create access to electrical infrastructure for Onawa Extensions 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
"These are the same areas where residents of Oshakati are allocated plots as they are relocated from various locations in Oshakati. The contractor was appointed in February 2023 and is expected to complete this project within six months," Hango said.
He added that council has made it a priority to improve gravel roads and avoid the reoccurrence of potholes in Oshakati, hence the decision to embark on a project of re-gravelling roads – which has already commenced in Evululuko and various areas in Oshakati.
Hango said upgrading the community development centre in Uupindi informal settlement is currently in progress and is expected to be completed by July 2023.
Strategic plans
He also highlighted successfully completed projects for the 2021–2022 financial year.
"Relocation of Oshoopala informal settlers’ phase one has been successfully completed, with over 49 households successfully relocated. Phase two of the Oshoopala relocation commenced on 15 May and is anticipated to be completed by 30 June 2023," Hango said.
He said the formalisation of Oshakati informal settlements is one of the important objectives of the council's strategic plan for the next five years.
Successes
So far, council has been successful in formalising the following Oshakati informal settlements: Evululuko, now known as Oshakati Extensions 10 and 11; Pohamba location, now known as Extension 13; parts of Okandjengedi South, now known as Oshakati Extension 15; Ompumbu Proper and phase one of Uupindi South.
Servicing of Oshakati North (Ehenye) Extension 11, consisting of at least 283 erven with roads, water, sewer, and electricity, commenced in March 2022, he said.
"The construction of water, sewer and electrical reticulations has been completed 100%. The construction of roads and storm water infrastructure is 85% completed and expected to be finalised by the end of May 2023. However, the council has already allocated residential erven in the said suburb, and construction of houses is ongoing," Hango said.
