The Oshakati town council on Friday re-elected Leonard Hango as its mayor during interim elections of the town’s office-bearers.

Similarly, Taarah Shalyefu was re-elected yesterday for the third time as the mayor of Ongwediva and will lead for a further 12 months.

Swapo councillor Puyeipawa Elifas retained her position as deputy mayor of Oshakati.

Ruusa Frans, Maria Mutumbulwa and Hofeni Mutota also retained their positions as members of the management committee, while Independent Patriots for Change’s (IPC) Jerobeam Ndaamohamba remains an ordinary councillor.

In Ongwediva, Swapo councillor Ulalia Katonyala retained her position as deputy mayor of the town.

Naemi Amuthenu (Swapo), Jona Helao (IPC) and Fabiam George (Swapo) remain members of the management committee. Kaarena Shikongo and Ottillie Haitota, both from IPC, are ordinary members.

To serve diligently

In his acceptance speech last Friday, Hango said he looks forward to “diligently serve” the residents of Oshakati.

Sound, responsive policy formulations are key for every institution to realise proper implementation of their intended plans, he said.

“We will continue to make remarkable contributions towards strengthening the town's democracy, service delivery and economic growth.”

He added that the council has drafted its strategic plan for 2022-2027, which will serve as a guiding tool on major projects for the next five years.

Dedicated efforts

Meanwhile in a speech yesterday, Shalyefu reaffirmed the commitment to continue advocating for hard work and what he termed ‘dedicated efforts’ to improve the living standards of Ongwediva residents.

He said the town council has secured land at Onawa South where a new extension is planned to accommodate low-income earners.

“This is in addition to Okandjengedi, Onawa and Mandume locations where 209 erven have been planned, surveyed and partially serviced with water. Council has also added more land to Efidi Extension 6, where medium- to low-income earners will be allocated land,” Shalyefu said.

He added that development is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation and collaboration.
