Oshana governor Elia Irimari described the late founding president Sam Nujoma as a towering figure of Namibia’s liberation struggle and a visionary leader who dedicated his life to securing the nation’s independence.

Irimari made the remarks on Sunday during the Oshana regional leadership memorial service, which was held in honour of Nujoma at the Ondangwa Trade Fair Centre.

Irimari said Nujoma’s resolute determination, unwavering patriotism, and deep commitment to justice laid the foundation for the sovereign Namibia “we proudly call home today.”

He said Nujoma was a man of immense wisdom, courage, and foresight, as well as an architect of the democratic institutions, adding that Nujoma was also a steadfast advocate for unity and self-reliance.

“As Namibia’s first president, Nujoma steered the nation through its formative years, ensuring peace, stability, and progress. His leadership transcended political boundaries, emphasising national unity, economic empowerment, and social development,” Irimari said.

Respected member of the global community

He added that under Nujoma’s stewardship, Namibia emerged as a respected member of the international community, firmly upholding the principles of sovereignty, democracy, and human rights.

Irimari said that as Namibians mourn his passing, they must also celebrate his rich legacy, and his tireless efforts in nation-building must continue to inspire those who come after him.

“Let us honour his memory by remaining steadfast in our pursuit of unity, development, and prosperity for all Namibians. His vision of a prosperous and industrialised Namibia, enjoying peace and harmony, must remain our collective aspiration,” he said.
