Water interruptions that have been plaguing the northern regions of the country will be a thing of the past this week, NamWater's chief strategy and corporate affairs officer Kadiva Hamutumwa said.

Ongwediva and Oshakati in the Oshana Region, some towns in Oshikoto as well as the Omusati and Ohangwena regions have been experiencing either water shortages or no water at all for the past weeks.

Homesteads that played host to weddings over the weekend were also left frustrated by the lack of water in their areas.

Hamutumwa said water interruptions were caused by emergency maintenance on the Omahenene-Olushandja section of the Calueque canal in Omusati last month.

The maintenance resulted in a decrease in the supply of crude water to the Oshakati purification plant, which is a source of water supply downstream to the Oshikoto and Ohangwena regions, she said.

Although NamWater was working around the clock to make sure that they are able to restore water by Sunday, yesterday some areas were still experiencing water shortages, Hamutumwa said.

No stone unturned

Meanwhile, water ministry executive director Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata said apart from the north central areas which are affected the Daures constituency of the Erongo Region, the Tondoro constituency in Kavango East and Otjombinde constituency in Omaheke have also been affected by water shortages.

Regarding water supply challenges in Oshikoto, the ministry has assured that government will leave no stone unturned to ensure that water is restored, Nghituwamata said.

She added that in future, the ministry will communicate in advance so that every resident is informed of any interruption to the water supply in their respective communities.

“The ministry is continuing to mobilise water tank trucks to provide emergency water to the affected communities countrywide, especially the Oshikoto Region's Okankolo, Eengodi and Nehale Lya Mpingana constituencies,” she said.

Nghituwamata added some tanks have been sourced from other ministries, and assured that water will be made available to all.
