No occupational land registered in Oshikoto

No occupational land has been registered in the Oshikoto Region – despite several schools, churches and non-governmental organisations in the region occupying communal land.

This according to communal land board chairperson Paulina Uugwanga, who said schools occupy communal land illegally.

“The law says that every institution or organisation on communal land must be registered,” she explained.

Uugwanga added that there is a lack of information on the registration of communal land, hence the prevalent illegal occupation of land in communal areas.

There is a dire need to educate people that the land needs to be registered for efficiency in land allocation and to solve disputes, she said.

Uugwanga further said the sale of communal land is illegal and culprits will face the law.

“It is disturbing when one sees posters written ‘plot for sale’ in the communal areas. The land does not belong to us; it belongs to the state. You cannot put a price on it.”
