NHE's new houses at Ondangwa 'restore dignity'

The recipients of 64 houses handed over by the National Housing Enterprise (NHE) in Ondangwa yesterday expressed joy and gratitude, describing the move as one that restores their dignity.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Inspector Lucia Heita of the Namibian Police at Ruben Danger Ashipala Police College, extended appreciation to the NHE and the Namibian government for their efforts to improve the livelihoods of Namibians. Heita, who submitted her housing application in October last year, praised NHE’s professionalism and integrity.

“This is not just about housing, it is about hope, dignity, and a bright future. Let us continue working together to build a Namibia where every citizen has a place to call home,” Heita said.

In a speech read on his behalf by the executive director of the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development Nghidinua Daniel, minister Erastus Uutoni highlighted the significance of housing as a means to address poverty, inequality, and ensure political stability.

Toska Sem, chairperson of the NHE board, noted that the successful completion of the project comes at a time when local authorities are expected to enhance service delivery due to increasing rural-to-urban migration. The 2023 Population and Housing Census shows that Ondangwa's population has grown from 22,000 in 2011 to over 31,000 in 2023, underscoring the need for affordable housing.

The 64 single residential units, constructed by Kambwa Construction at a cost of N$20 million, created employment for 204 workers, mostly from the Oshana Region.

“The NHE has adopted a drastic approach to increase the annual housing output in urban centres to ensure that the national housing backlog is significantly reduced,” Sem said.
