Nedbank Desert Dash launched
• More than 1 000 cyclists taking part
Nedbank Namibia officially launched the 19th edition of the Nedbank Desert Dash in Windhoek yesterday.
The Nedbank Desert Dash, dubbed the longest single-stage mountain bike race in the world, is slated to take place from 8 to 9 December.
Cyclists will cycle from Grove Mall Windhoek to Swakopmund’s Platz Am Meer Mall through the Khomas-Hochland Mountains in 24 hours.
More than 1 000 cyclists have entered this year’s event, with 160 cyclists participating in the two-man teams, 624 in the four-person teams and 190 cyclists riding solo. A total of 38 participants will take part in the new half-dash category, which will see cyclists over 50 years of age cycling from the Hollard half-way point to the finish line.
The race will also include a first-ever e-bike category for four-person teams, where each cyclist will be required to ride on an e-bike.
National unity
During the launch of the event, sports minister Agnes Tjongarero said the Nedbank Desert Dash is an event that is essential for Namibia’s growth, as it unites people, encourages well-being and cultivates a sense of national unity.
“The Nedbank Desert Dash serves as a prime illustration of this concept, as it not only highlights our country's beauty but also motivates Namibians to embrace active living and tackle individual challenges. This is not just any race; it's a gateway to opportunities, a chance to showcase Namibia on the international stage. Let us not take these opportunities for granted,” Tjongarero said.
She called on fellow corporations to join Nedbank Namibia’s lead in nurturing the sports sector by investing in athletes, facilities and events.
Land of the brave
Speaking at the same event, Nedbank Namibia’s managing director, Martha Murorua, said: “Nedbank Namibia’s commitment to cycling events has contributed to the growth of cycling in Namibia and has raised the profile of Namibian cyclists on the international stage."
Murorua concluded by thanking the organisers, cyclists and every key player contributing to the success of the Nedbank Desert Dash.
“To all the participants, organisers and everyone who plays a role in making the Nedbank Desert Dash a reality, I extend my sincere appreciation for your dedication and hard work. Your collective efforts have made this race a symbol of strength, determination and the spirit of the Land of the Brave.”
Nedbank Namibia has over the past 35 years been a pillar of the cycling community in the country, supporting various cycling events including the Nedbank Windhoek Pedal Power Race Series, the Nedbank Rock n Rut XC Series, and the Nedbank Cycle Challenge, amongst others.
The event is proudly sponsored by Nedbank Namibia and co-sponsored by SuperSpar (Maerua and The Grove), Indongo Toyota, Trek and Hollard.
